Hydroponics and its Types

  • Home

It can be confusing to get started with hydroponics. Figuring out how it works, how to choose the system, and what to grow is a question for many people.

If you want to enter into hydroponics, choosing The Desert Hydro is an excellent choice. We are the largest hydroponics supplier in Cathedral city.

How does hydroponics work?

Hydroponics is growing plants using only water, nutrients, and a growing medium. It is a method of gardening without the use of soil.

Types of hydroponic systems

Check the types of hydroponic systems.

  • Wick Systems
  • Deep Water Culture (DWC)
  • Nutrient Film Technique (NFT).
  • Ebb and Flow (Flood and Drain)
  • Aeroponics
  • Drip Systems
  • Wick system

The nutrients and water is moved into the plant’s root zone via a wick. These systems are great for smaller plants that don’t require a lot of water or nutrients. It is also great for beginner gardeners and children.

  • Deep water culture systems

It is one of the easiest types of hydro systems. You use a reservoir to hold a nutrient solution. The plant roots are suspended in the solution and they get a constant supply of water, oxygen, and nutrients. Deep water culture systems require less maintenance and are totally inexpensive.

  • Nutrient film technique (NFT) systems

The NFT system is one of the most popular commercial hydroponic systems. The plants are grown in channels that have a nutrient solution pumping through them. Here the plant roots are not completely submerged in the NFT system.

In NFT the plants are placed using net pots and a growing medium.

  • Flow and drain systems

This is a less commonly seen type. In this system, the roots of the plants are not exposed to nutrient solution on a constant basis. The plants are grown in a tray filled with a growing medium.

Flow and drain system is completely flexible and makes efficient use of water and energy.

  • Aeroponics system

An aeroponic system is similar to an NFT system and the roots are directly suspended in air. Aeroponics system achieves this by misting the root zone with a nutrient solution.

This system grows plants more quickly than the other types of systems. One of the benefits of this system is that roots are exposed to more oxygen.

  • Drip systems

This system is very common in commercial operations. Drip systems are seen in lesser amounts in recreational gardens.

Choosing this system is economical and is highly durable.

Hydroponics offers great flexibility and many other considerable benefits. You have made a great decision if you choose hydroponics.
